claimant commitment used to force medication or medical appointments Empty claimant commitment used to force medication or medical appointments

The government’s own social security advisers have called for “urgent” action to stop jobcentre staff forcing claimants of universal credit (UC) to take medication or attend medical appointments in return for receiving their benefits.

It is supposed to be DWP policy that only work-related activities are included in the claimant commitment, but SSAC said it was “clear that this is not happening in all cases”.

Anyone have an update on this as a friend of mine a while ago had a similar situation with roach shop imposing that they must do X ,see GP,specialist, stand on head etc  as a part of their claimant agreement ? Could not see in the link below where it says dwp jc can not impose a requirement like that ?

The effectiveness of the claimant commitment in Universal Credit.

This looks like a WC trying to coerce a claimant into following an unlawful direction.

Medical interventions / treatments are entirely voluntary and cannot be mandated by DWP / JCP via the JSA/ or UC/CC.

The voluntary section of the CC must be utilised for JSA and UC claimants.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/consent-to-treatment/Defining consent

For consent to be valid, it must be voluntary and informed, and the person consenting must have the capacity to make the decision.

The meaning of these terms are:

voluntary – the decision to either consent or not to consent to treatment must be made by the person, and must not be influenced by pressure from medical staff, friends or family
informed – the person must be given all of the information about what the treatment involves, including the benefits and risks, whether there are reasonable alternative treatments, and what will happen if treatment does not go ahead
capacity – the person must be capable of giving consent, which means they understand the information given to them and can use it to make an informed decision

as posted earlier on this post id read about it just never seen it written onto someones cc

a dwp jobsworth cannot determine what a claimant takes or does not take as dwp are not the doctor prescribing stuff to the claimant

id probably use the reference to dwp asking if they are prescribed doctors who have knowlege of medicine and are they willing to accept responsibility with their own statements written into the cc naming themselves  on the document

certainly an unlawful reference

thankyou everyone who replied

I bet none will though.
