Labour former frontbencher Paul Flynn called on medicinal smokers to: "Break the law! Come here (to Parliament) and use cannabis here!" His surprising comments came in a Commons debate about drug policy in which the divide between MPs on the issue was laid bare. wrote:

The status of the drug legislation in this Country could be used as a litmus test for the general quality of our society.
While throughout the world prohibitionist is on the wane, it is going still strongly here.
Some timid attempts by isolated members the main opposition party only confirm how far behind we are.
If anything it seems we are racing toward the bottom.
