Hull asks to be first UK city to trial universal basic income

Under proposal, every adult would get between £50 and £100 a week regardless of income.

Sam Gregory, who chairs a UBI lab in Sheffield in support of the scheme, said Hull’s backing was an important moment for basic income in the UK. He said:
“Three major northern cities – Liverpool, Sheffield and Hull – have now asked to host pilots of this radical new idea, because the Westminster way of doing things has failed these communities for far too long.

“Even the Conservative councillors in Hull voted for this motion, saying that they were open-minded about a pilot in the city. We don’t know if UBI is the answer, but there’s a growing consensus between different political parties that we need to test it out.”

It's a logical thing to offer anyone who's unemployed. But the elite don't want it to happen because their happy with economy running on free to cheap sheep, rather than trying to constructively help peoples lives in a genuine way. Universal credit is not and will not be the answer. Just another form of control of the masses.

Great idea which is why they're trying the hardest for this idea not to happen. Tried in some parts of Europe and I believe some trials proved to be good. Politicians answer, let's not do that. Imagine it, everyone on ubi trying to actually better themselves without the state breathing down their necks every day. Certain people wouldn't be needed would they. All those lawyers who write all the regs etc surplus to requirements

And you forgot what the tabloid press in this country would say about the UBI @jobberpw. You could imaging 'money for nothing', and some other out dated Victorian concept of work being of moral and social value to the individual. And there where some others to whom thought work was high ideal, "Arbeit macht frei", and look what happend there.

I can't help thing of the old chestnut of "Bread and the circus". To keep the populace subdued, maybe the new version should be social media: 'Facebook' & 'Twitter'... Instead of talking about the UBI.
