A particularly serious and cruelly Kafkaesque problem for hundreds of thousands of people if not millions.
Lots of people, originally from other EU countries, have found out that in spite of being living here for many years, they are still considered without settled status. It means that they are entitled to 3 months of any kind of benefits including HBs. Usually, they are not aware of their circumstances until they find themselves in need.
I know cases of people that have gone through divorce or illness and find that they cannot enrol on UC (and therefore get HBS!!) or that they are told that cannot access help because they have already used the three months worth of benefits to which they are entitled.
To all intents, they are second class citizen.
The present registration scheme for EU nationals seems to alleviate the problem some way but the inhumanity of it all is simply staggering.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
