Using the UC online journal may not be mandatory
I found this FOI. It seems to indicate that using the online UC journal is an optional activity for demonstrating job search evidence.

Does anyone think there is a different interpretation?

Work search activities
Work search activities can be:
required – with failure to carry out those activities resulting in a potential reduction
in the payment of Universal Credit
voluntary – with no reduction in the payment of Universal Credit if these specific
activities are not carried out (but see Expected hours)
There are two sub-categories of work search activity. A general requirement to take all
reasonable action and particular, specific actions accepted on the Claimant
Commitment.
All work searches should be for the purpose of obtaining paid work, more paid work or
better-paid work. Work search activities include:
carrying out work searches
making applications
creating and maintaining an online history
registering with an employment agency
seeking references
any other actions
Evidence
A claimant has to provide information and / or evidence if requested in order to show they are
able to comply with the rules relating to work-related requirements.
Does anyone think there is a different interpretation?

Re: Using the UC online journal may not be mandatory
Addendum
Since the journal may be used, by DWP, like a sanction tool, I would understand why claimants might feel reluctant to use it, and would prefer not to.

DWP says Universal Credit Journal not mandatory for your Work Search records or CV
“It is not a mandatory requirement for the claimant to provide the required work search evidence via their journal. The claimant must be able to provide written evidence of their work search.
It is not mandatory for the claimant to upload their CV onto the journal, the claimant must however be able to show a completed and up to date CV. ”

"Please provide relevant guidance setting out details of alternative work search evidence provision methods e.g. written, typed, printed, which are acceptable as job search evidence, instead of claimants using the online universal credit journal. "
