The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has today announced its intention to make over 800 redundancies in the next 6 months resulting from the office closure programme and the implementation of the department's corporate centre hub strategy.

Any idea where the axe is going to fall for these DWP Offices, Admin, just said 'in the next six months' 
? As my local JCP is on the list for closure, but been given any clue about 'if and when'. From the Work-roach, still I will be shedding a tear when the roaches are made unemployed

I presume that those affected will be offered assistance with their job-search to enable them to move swiftly back into the labour market

So, on the one hand they are recruiting thousands of new work coaches, but on the other hand they are making 800 people redundant?

I would expect that the ones being made redundant would be invited to apply for their old jobs. I wonder if they are put on a redeployment register in the same way that some NHS trusts operate, prioritising workers at risk of redundancy. I feel a FOI coming on.

not if dwp have there way i suspect these jobs are going abroad
there call centres will be held abroad and if anything to go with the uk call centers it will be bloody awful to call them

Don't think they can do that without a change in the law as they cannot dictate to us how we present our job search evidence.

I think the DWP are divesting themselves of employees who have worked for them for a long time and are replacing them with newer ones so that UC sanctions will be easier to implement. An older member of staff at my local joke centre told me last year that he was expecting voluntary redudancy and would readily accept it. He'd already been taken off the signing desks and was clearly being sidelined despite his senior grade. He wasn't the sort of man who would threaten a working person with a sanction and the DWP simply can't have employees like that. Easier to get rid of them via a "redundancy" they created in the first place.

I do not think this is the primary reason for the squeezing of the workforce but certainly will be a side effect of it.
The primary function of the JSP is to keep the number of unemployed low by making as difficult or pointless as possible to claim.
Obviously in future, if the fortune of the present elites and the political parties they influence allows it, the scrapping of these benefits will make the entire jocentreplus workforce will become redundant.
A point I always make to any coach willing enough to listen.

I think WCs know that the labour market is saturated though. They are just being disingenuous when they tell people they are not trying to get the jobs. There are not enough jobs for us all.
I recently applied for a very basic clerical job. I was not even selected for an interview (or even acknowledged at all). I suspect too many others applied for this single vacancy.

Quite true. I have extensive clerical qualifications including typing at over 60wpm. A rough calculation is that 80% of the applications I've sent were never acknowledged.
