Povberty is certainly not something they are acquainted with.
In their world, of inner circles, inherited wealth, well paid jobs and properties ownership, poverty is a moral fault.
It is applicable to someone that has wasted their resources and possibilities by behaving inappropriately.
They apply the same logic to all and sundry. Hence much of their moralising attitude toward us.
Orwell was right in many more ways that he, himself, probably ever imagined.

It is a common fault, not only restricted to the well off.
Attributing derogative moral qualities to extraneous groups its all too common.
However this is no excuse.
Especially when one has the possibility of educating oneself, persisting in discrimination is a testament to their moral fibre or lack of it.
Unfortunately when people act in groups they egg each other on their chosen path toward the extremes.
The more isolated is the group, the more difficult is to curb this inbuilt trend.
While not a clear example, it is interesting to note that in the recent brexit vote, there was a reverse proportion of "leave" vote to the presence of immigrants for population size.
The more mixed was the community the more those entitled to vote, voted "remain".
Some kind of mythical idea and fear of "foreigners" seemed to have spread the easiest where there were less of them to counteract a spreading xenophobic tendency.
I wander if among our elites, a progressive isolation of the wealthy (in conjunction with their disproportionate increase in social disparity) in the last couple of generations, has contributed to the observable prevalent neoliberal style "peniaphobia".
