Sector Based Work Academy
I just realised that we have nothing on the forum about this and yet it remains a current scheme and people are still referred to it, so we really need something, if anyone has any information.
To start, I found this:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sector-based-work-academies-employer-guide/sector-based-work-academies-employer-guide
SBWA is not suitable for everyone, so I believe that we need more information about the consequences of whether or not to choose to participate in this, particularly in regard to people who are not given all the facts prior to referral to this scheme.
Any takers?

DWP Response:
DWP has several schemes which are voluntary. These schemes are available
for people who are interested in gaining the necessary skills to help move into

Re: Sector Based Work Academy
The scheme is currently voluntary until the individual agrees to attend (JSA claimants).
Once agreed, the only elements that are mandatory include: The training and the interview.

Hello and welcome Catwoman!
To clarify what does it actually say in your cc? Agreeing to get some information about the scheme is not same as agreeing to start.
The scheme is mandatory once you agree to start. However, you do not have to do the work experience element. Further, You must be provided with all the information about the scheme before you make a decision. What did the adviser tell you?

Re: Sector Based Work Academy
Thanks for the welcome.
First of all I had a ten minute appointment where the advisor signed me on the refereed me to a job screening. Then she wanted to update cc. She asked me if all the details are the same and I said yes so she printed it out for me to sign. Thats when she said ive added under other actions ' I will participate on sector based work academies in order to improve my employment propects'. I dont know why I signed it but I did.
Now as I said she said she would print out the same cc as berfore and I forgot myself and believed her, when I got home and actually read the cc.she added to my cc that I will log in to ujm to find and apply for jobs I can do. Now when she did my cc last year i told her I did not want ujm on my cc as she can't guarantee I can log in to it everyday. After an argument she didn't put it on it, but now she sneakily added it without discussing it with me.
Do you think I should wait to my next cc review to bring up removing ujm on cc with her. She must think I dont know shes added on to my cc. Just to cover myself ive been logging on to ujm and writing in the notes logged on and ive screenshot it if she wants proof.
After that she gave me another appointment to see someone about retail jobs but because she doesn't know if the woman will be in she said come and see me on wesnday and I 'll see if shes in, so she didn't even book the appointment on her computer. All this happened within 10 minutes so it was pretty overwhelming usually im more prepared when I see wc.

You cannot agree to something you know anything about. You can challenge this if you wish?

Re: Sector Based Work Academy
welcome to the site
what was actually done was add something that wasnt agreed upon only what your adviser decided to put onto your cc most are now doing it without peoples knowledge
to me its fraud but there get out clause is we gave you to read it before you signed it
therefore you consented to say everything is correct on the document at that time
many on this forum has come across this situation and if you appeal it another adviser does the same and agrees with the first adviser

Re: Sector Based Work Academy
Always read the cc through and query anything which has not been discussed with you or which you specifically do not agree to.

Re: Sector Based Work Academy
Has anyone heard of the Intermediate Labour Market Scheme? It's very like the SBWA but a shorter 5 day course with a guaranteed interview at the end.

It seems to be a resurrection of the Intermediate Labour Market Programme!

It is not a mandatory scheme as defined in JSA legislation, so you cannot be mandated to participate.
Some areas try to issue a Jobseeker's Direction for courses that are not schemes or programmes, but this is unlawful in most cases.

Re: Sector Based Work Academy
Thanks ND. That's great info. I've struggled to source documents on it. In my area it's being run by Aspire. A work coach is attempting to get me on the scheme. It is located outside the travel distance restriction on my CC.

Re: Sector Based Work Academy
Absolut,
These so called "schemes" will have different names, but very similar content.
You need to check whether yours is a SBWA. However, you already know you don't have to accept the course. You can be mandated to an information session/interview to find out more; your CC cannot be ignored.

Re: Sector Based Work Academy
Thanks ND. I've been given minimal information, which I believe is on purpose. The document I have been sent has STEP/ILM on it. It does not state how long it's for. I am deeply suspicious.
I take it I can't be mandated to anything if it's over my agreed travel distance?
P.S She booked me an appointment stating it was located in my home town and then cancelled it later when she "discovered" that it was not. I have written confirmation of that.
