Like ourselves, all societies can too improve or degenerate.
There is a sort of baseline between cruelty and empathy, that any stage of a civilisation is more or less the prevalent benchmark, against which the level of good and evil is pegged to, but it is a constantly shifting line.

For roughly two generations in this Country, we have been subjected to a neo-liberalist propaganda that tells how the people at the top are better humans than the rest of us and how the looser at the bottom are the ones that drag down those that could be aspiring to join the elites.

The demonisation of the weak, the infirm and the unlucky is all about diverting the attention from those that accumulate wealth out of inflicting misery on a grand scale.
From their point of view setting fire to a poor, enfeebled individual is much preferable than having the same sick perpetrators set fire to their mansions.

Perhaps the most disheartening aspect of this horror is that most people would now object to the sadic barbarism of the deed but not to the need to move along "undesirables" living among them.

I believe that neo-liberalism has created an empathy gap between the most vulnerable members of society and the privileged members of society. I do not believe that is accidental.
