Wikipedia always offers a useful introduction to the topic but for what I understand the central tenet of this quasi-economic/social doctrine is that mankind is motivated primarily by egoism.
Then if everybody looks after its own there is the possibility of a stalemate, where each member of society ekes out a living because cannot do any worse to each other.
In essence not very different from the MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction) of the Cold War.
Fortunately for us all is simply not true.
