Man armed with knife 'holds job centre staff'
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-40216979
Staff at a Jobcentre in Newcastle are being held by a man armed with a knife.
The armed man entered the premises on Clifford Street in Byker at about 08:00 BST. Several members of staff are thought to be held there, police said.
Police negotiators are at the scene and the roads around the premises have been closed as a precaution.
Northumbria Police said the man responsible was known to the Jobcentre and it was being treated as an isolated incident at this stage.
A statement from police said: "Police are aware that there are a number of concerns about the ongoing situation in Byker following recent terror incidents in Manchester and London.
"At this time there is no information or intelligence to suggest this is a terrorist incident."
Officers said it had been suggested on social media and by members of the public at the scene that some people had been stabbed, but the force said this was "not the case".

Re: Man armed with knife 'holds job centre staff'
It was only a question of time before something like this happend! I hope no one gets sanctioned for not being able to see their work-roach today at Byker JCP.
Re: Man armed with knife 'holds job centre staff'
I just hope there are not any repercussion from this in the local JCP’s from stricter security checks and even more draconian measures against us to have to use these buildings. Someone gave me a link to this which might be of use to some people. Pg 15 Searching of Individuals .

Also I thought only a police office or doctor could examine a person, not some private security goon?

not entirely correct they can search if the arrestor has reasonable grounds for believing that the arrest is necessary to prevent the person: causing physical injury to himself or others; suffering physical injury; causing loss of or damage to property;
knife, screwdriver in the pocket you dont want someone that is arrested using them on you
however in most cases you dont need to do a search

So you are quite at liberty to tell the JCP Goon where to go then as long as you’re not seen as a danger to them . And it’s back to that wording “Reasonable” again .

Re: Man armed with knife 'holds job centre staff'
I think DWP/Security staff will be subjected to a great deal of non-physical abuse, some deserved and some not.
Due to the current climate where staff knowingly break the rules daily they will point the finger at the benefit claimant rather than themselves to save face (DWP officials represent the Secretary of State!). Taking into consideration the bad apples in every organisation, for example, doctors/nurses who deliberately kill/harm their patients, almost everything else falls from the top of tree!

Re: Man armed with knife 'holds job centre staff'
as an ex dwp security guard years ago
you was there to patrol the jcp office keeping the peace helping and aiding the people who came into the jcp offices advicing them where to go
as goes for security the rule of thumb is to contain the situation and not allow the situation get out of hand if anything its mainly to protect the building and its staff members
for things getting out of hand your there to calm the situation if not try to take it outside
remember security guards use my personal space reference please dont enter it keeping patrons at arms length members of the public can also use this reference
some guards dont they thrive on trouble in a persons face body intimidation, these guys shouldnt be in that type of job as there just bully goons
i can say these days the security in jcp offices has changed there now there for intimidation against its patrons that advisors now use
a client goes in gets called over sorts out his jobsearch then the advisor starts stating things they havent done causing the situation in the first place as the client gets upperty the advisor then calls the security guard over not to calm the situation but used as bully boy tactics
then they throw in that they are going to have to sanction the client yet another bully boy tactic yet the client states ive done everything thats required of me in a stressed out voice, but the jcp advisor simply ignores and disagrees mostly with fictious comments that equals not actively seeking work mine and a few others was
didnt search online only
havent provided the evidence in what the advisor wants to see not the old es4jp document but a fictious documnet
as abc and many others have found havent provided them a copy of there jobsearch
the list goes on
then the security guard states calm down or we will call the police whilst stood right behind you
ive turned around and said what are you going to do! as ive already done your job and know exactly what you can do and cant do
one ive told not to invade my space keeping at arms length that kinda shocked them
another i informed them of the regs when they got involved i had an apology off them as shouldnt know a persons data information but somehow they knew too much info that they shouldnt have
another time i informed the security guard of the regs which jcp advisors should be using instead of a printed out document that jcp manager had supplied to the security guard
it was fun showing him the actual regs 2 weeks later i also got an apology for that event 2 weeks before
ive been asked to leave the jcp office once they have refused to interview us due to recording there ive refused as was wanting to do jobsearch at the kiosks which i was doing before trying to sign on
however note i wasnt breaking the peace or causing a nuisance within jcp office just looking online the security guard re demanded that i l;eave the building otherwise theyed call the police i said go ahead knowing i was recording and could prove what i was saying in end i did my jobsearch and left the building no police had visited after this either
oh ive had some fun

Re: Man armed with knife 'holds job centre staff'
I've been wondering how long before the JCP waste money on metal-detector security screening's, before we enter there buildings?

Ha, if they did install metal detectors CTS wrist splints, crutches and wheelchairs would all set it off, plus all those unlucky people with bits of metal in their bodies following operations.

Re: Man armed with knife 'holds job centre staff'
There have been several incidences over the years of claimants carrying knives/other weapons into a benefit office. Due to the current climate (sanctions etc.), there are more security guards in Jobcentres than ever before.
I agree with Absolut regarding the problems with metal scanners.

Someone at the daily mail needs to get the maths right.

Well spotted.

"Reported actual assaults have dropped over the past two years. Jobcentre Plus advisers conduct more than 25 million interviews with claimants each year – in that context, physical assaults on staff are very rare and are now falling," he said.
As many WCs fabricate verbal UCB allegations and get their mates to lie along with them I'd say the overall figures put out by the DWP on all "assaults" are highly suspect.

Does anyone recon the JCP office's will go back to their staff being behind safety glass/chicken wire before long? Instead of the open-plan style of desks and sofa’s, since this incidence?

In my view, screening attracts aggressive and unacceptable behaviour.
I could write a book about this matter!
