The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has seen one of its most controversial policies torn to bits in just one graphic.
The DWP: under fire again

Halton Housing is a housing association in the North West. It operates around 7,000 homes, many of which are for social rent. But on Monday 28 August, its chief executive Nick Atkin took to Twitter. He showed some startling facts about the impact the DWP’s flagship benefit, Universal Credit, is having on his tenants:

Its summary showed that:

People on Universal Credit owe 63.7% of all rent arrears. But just 24.9% of tenants are on the benefit.
Universal Credit claimants’ arrears have increased by 76% on average.
There was a £210,000 increase in arrears due to Universal Credit in a year.
Before Universal Credit, the average rent arrears was £207. Now it’s £365.
Halton’s debt recovery teams have had to double in size since the DWP launched Universal Credit.

Not sure whether to file this under 'UC' or 'housing' cyclops

I wonder if Nick Atkin is inclined to raise his extra admin' costs with the DWP, as he attributes them (quite correctly) to the problems caused by UC. pale
