just quietly revealed the Bedroom Tax has been an utter failure
On Thursday 9 November the government quietly released the latest housing statistics for 2015/16. And buried in a spreadsheet is a single graph that shows how the so-called ‘Bedroom Tax’ has been a complete failure.
A million spare bedrooms?
In 2014, then Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith spoke about what he called “the removal of spare room subsidy” but critics dubbed ‘the Bedroom Tax’. He claimed that UK social housing had “a million spare bedrooms”. And that for the taxpayer to pay for these via housing benefit was:

I wouldn't call it an utter failure.
It plays its part in the dismantling of social housing.
At the very least has successfully introduced the idea, unthinkable until few years ago, that Housing Benefits could be cut and people evicted from places where they had perhaps lived all of their lives.
It has inured the population at large on the plight of homelessness and made feel people that has bought their Council (or in the future their Housing Association) homes they had been smarter than their neighbours.
All of this will end badly, but for them, our local neoliberal elites, has been a gas so far.
