Re: The Conservatives are heading into trouble over universal credit
On a side comment I have to say I tend to feel sad, reading well meaning articles, like the one mentioned above from the Newstateman.
There is a pervasive sense of acceptance, a gradual sense of retreat from what should be rightly expected from a government and what citizen could expect to be entitled to.
Gently talking about an other squeeze on the poor, like it was a matter of wrong priorities and mistaken policy.
Another way to forget that for us is a matter of life and death "Landmark study links Tory austerity to 120,000 deaths Government is accused of 'economic murder'"
From\"The Independent wrote:The paper identified that mortality rates in the UK had declined steadily from 2001 to 2010, but this reversed sharply with the death rate growing again after austerity came in.
From this reversal the authors identified that 45,368 extra deaths occurred between 2010 and 2014, than would have been expected, although it stops short of calling them "avoidable".
Based on those trends it predicted the next five years - from 2015 to 2020 - would account for 152,141 deaths - 100 a day - findings which one of the authors likened to “economic murder”.
To compare one can think that during the entire WW2 "Though militarily ineffective, the Blitz cost around 41,000 lives, may have injured another 139,000 people" (Wikipedia: The Blitz
Data from the paper "Effects of health and social care spending constraints on mortality in England: a time trend analysis" published by the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ)
